In my search for spirituality I came across some famous Zen Stories of which I liked this story a lot. This story is a classic example of the unstable mind .

According to the story , there were 2 monks named  Paul and John. They were once traveling together down a road. And suddenly it started to rain heavily. Soon the dry soil converted to mud and it became difficult to walk through the roads.

Coming around a bend, they met a lovely girl. She was waiting there quite long it seemed. The girl was stuck there between an intersection where the water accumulated due to the tremendous rain and was desperately looking for help.

Looking at her Paul decided to help her cross the pit . “Come on, girl,” said Paul at once. Lifting her in his arms, he carried her over the mud.

Paul and John were quite happy that today was a quite good day as they helped someone. John did not speak again until that night when they reached a lodging temple. He looked at Paul and stopped himself at first. Then he no longer could restrain himself.

“We monks don’t go near females,” he told Paul, “especially not young and lovely ones. It is dangerous. Why did you do that?”

Paul smiled at him and anticipating his question exclaimed with a sigh “I left the girl there,” . “Are you still carrying her?”

Instantly enlightened John was filled with tears and was amazed at his seniority.

The takeaway from this story is that Mind is such a player. Handling it in a way that can be useful to you is very important . It needs focus and dedication to bring that mind running after anything and anyone, back to doing what you want.

Don’t let your mind stop you from achieving what you want. The biggest obstacle you ever have to overcome is your mind.

If you can overcome that it will help you overcome anything. You should be the supreme authority of your mind. Tame it and train it to make it’s best use.
