Who in India does not know this name ? Ratan Tata.  He has been awarded Padma Vibhushan and Padma Bhushan in the year 2008 & 2000 respectively for his contribution towards trade and industry. Known for many reasons and if we can learn from him about these below skills, then it will help us to achieve more in our life.

Working in TCS, (Tata Consultancy Services) I have known the culture and the values for more than 7 years now. I am very proud to say that I am a part of such a value driven company. “Safety” (Professional and also personal) is among the first among the priority list for TCSers. Its not about only being succesfull for Tata’s, its about putting the values first and allowing success be the result of those values. The Tata’s are known for following values

1. Humility : One of the biggest skill he has is Humbleness. There are countless examples to show his humility. Let me mention few example here : he visited all 80 families affected by 26/11 attack. He has the ability to remember people by their first name. When you are humble, you win hearts of many, eventually knowing more about them. They also help you acknowledge your success, achievements. I feel, speaking with an open heart is no less than a value in itself.

2. Never give up on your values: A company runs on principles and not on personalities. How many times we deviate our values. Most of the time we does not stick with our principles. Mr. Ratan Tata and Tata group had some core values on which they never gave up. Public Safety and welfare is one of their main core values which they always followed. Similarly we can also create core values for yourself and never give up on this irrespective of situations. (eg. Following routines, good habits, reading books etc)

3. Be open to criticism : As per a famous quote by Ratan Tata, ‘Take the stones people throw at you and use them to build a monument’. The moment we decide to do something, you will receive many criticism, obstacles and you won’t always receive appreciation. There will be people who will try to pull you down and criticize to shatter your spirit. Ignoring all the criticisms and moving forward is the rule of life.

I know that there are many more values that the Tata’s are famous for.  He is also a member of the Harvard Business School India Advisory Board (IAB) since 2006 and previously a member of the Harvard Business School Asia-Pacific Advisory Board (APAB) 2001-2006. Famous for his social deeds, he is a person that can be looked up to. Thanks for teaching us so many good things in life.
